Autism is a frustrating disorder mostly because there are no known causes or cures. Most other such diseases throw you a bone or something, but autism just draws a blank much of the time. Some even think that it has got to be environmental factors that bring it about, but there is not data to prove all that. And so we keep on guessing and testing and hoping that someday before all our kids are born that way, we will find a way to put the syndrome away.
About one of the commonest and most easily recognizable symptoms of autism is poor eye contact. I am yet to see an autistic person who would look you right in the eye for any reason. Even if you held them by the head and turned their faces around, you would still have trouble catching their eyes. As a matter of fact, an older child could already have responded at this time with screams and noises at the invasion. Watch out for such early signs in your kids, you wouldn?t want to miss them and have to begin treatment of the condition later in life. Yes, the sooner you begin treating autism, the better the chances.
It is rare to have an autistic child imitate the sounds or gestures from their caregiver. It does not matter much that it is a parent or a stranger, they just appear to lock themselves up in a distant world. In certain severe cases, the child even appears to be unable to distinguish a parent from any other person. If you have an autistic child who recognizes and responds to you, you are on good ground.
Observe an autistic child and you might find, in an awkward and weird sense, that they are actually easy to be around ? if you learn to leave them be. They never seem to have a lot of interests, and often prefer to stare, rock, or line up toys and things. So if you stay out of their way, they are perfectly happy until they need something. And then the real trouble begins because since the child never really learnt to speak, you might have trouble learning to understand what they are trying to say at that time.
